What has worked best for me is starting smaller. The useful opportunities usually come from a dinner, a WhatsApp intro, or a focused meetup through church groups, not from the broadest networking flyer.

Akosua Frimpong · Mar 7, 2026, 2:58 PM

If you are in Diaspora-wide, I would ask who is already gathering around community hubs or family-heavy neighborhoods for professional meetups. The strongest rooms are usually the ones where people already know why they are there.

The most useful networking I have found in New York still happens in smaller WhatsApp circles after someone meets you in person at an event or church program. Public events are good, but private follow-up is where the real value starts.

Yaw Asare · Mar 11, 2026, 10:01 AM

I would prioritize industry-specific events over broad 'diaspora professionals' mixers if you are looking for real follow-through. The general ones are good for visibility, but the targeted ones create better next steps.

Any trusted groups for job referrals in DC?

The most reliable referral help I have seen in DC comes from smaller diaspora circles where people know each other well enough to actually vouch. The bigger groups are useful for leads, but not always for follow-through.

Yaw Asare · Mar 10, 2026, 7:25 AM

Try to separate job-lead groups from real referral groups. Plenty of communities post openings, but far fewer will actively push your resume internally.

The strongest collaborations I have seen started with people being very clear about stage, role, and what they can actually contribute. 'Let us build something' is not enough.

Tunde Adebayo · Mar 5, 2026, 7:20 PM

If you are serious, post what you are building, who the customer is, and what kind of collaborator you need. That makes it much easier for the right people to respond.
