DC had strong energy this year because people were out all weekend, not just one night. The after-events and brunches made it feel like a real city-wide moment instead of a single party.

New York had good turnout but felt more fragmented to me. There were a lot of options, which was good, but you had to already know where your people were going.

The strongest cultural groups I have seen are the ones that meet outside the big annual events. If a community is already gathering through church communities or student housing chats, the festivals feel much more rooted.

Kofi Mensah · Mar 10, 2026, 6:20 AM

In my experience, the people who keep culture alive long-term are not only the loud organizers. It is usually the aunties, youth leaders, and family coordinators who keep showing up quietly around North York and Scarborough.

The biggest difference for me has been how much more visible the returnee conversation is now. People are not just visiting quietly anymore, they are building networks and making longer-term decisions.

Abena Darko · Mar 6, 2026, 11:24 PM

Pricing shocks a lot of people at first, especially if they are expecting nostalgia more than reality. The city is changing fast and planning with current prices matters.
