One thing that helped me was choosing convenience over hype. Being near Etobicoke or another area with actual community movement made the first few months easier than chasing the 'best' place on paper.
If the question is practical, I would start with church communities before anything else. In my experience, those groups share honest advice faster than public posts, especially when housing, groceries, or church communities are involved.
